Its all in the shoes

Its very interesting the things you see on the NYC trains. This time I found myself looking down and seeing the shoes people wear. Did you ever stop and think how important your feet are? Your feet are what anchors your body to the ground you walk, stand, and run on. Does that sound important to you? I hope so. Happy feet lead to a happy person. The body works as a whole and any problem with your arch or ankle will just see itself carry up the kinetic chain which is the human body. Your only as strong as your weakest link and a foot imbalance can lead to knee, hip or lower back injuries as well as carrying itself all the way up to your neck and leading to a possible headache.  Hope your following me. It just seems odd that something so simple is usually taken for granted. We seem to choose fashion over function when buying shoes. If your over weight or have fallen arches why do you choose to wear flats, flip flops, or tennis shoes( converse) ? Most of these have little to no support in the arch. this can lead to ankle sprains and knee injuries.  Then we have those people with wide feet that continue to purchase narrow shoes just for the look. In the long run your choosing shoes that look good that will only cause your feet to look bad. They will cause bunions as well as chance the functional geometry of the foot which during toe off should be lead by the big toe. This is one of the reasons people with Morton's toe ( a second toe which is longer then the big toe) have foot problems. It throws off the balance of how the fore foot land and toes lift during forward movement.  The last thing I noticed today was people who where wearing sandals or opened back shoes were the heal of the foot was hanging over the end of the shoe. We have shoe sizes for a reason. If your going to wear a shoe buy the size that fits and the size you would like to be. This will only lead to an ankle injury down the road.  Now I understand times are tough economically for all, but saving a few bucks now by not buying the proper shoe or even spending money on designer shoes that are only meant to look good will cost you later on. The 10 or 20 bucks you save now will only lead to you needing bunion removal, knee or hip surgery, etc. Spend the time do the research and visit a shoe store that will truly analyze your foot and walking patter. Your worth the extra money.
